SOUTH Ribble MP David Borrow is preparing to deal with criticisms from small-minded locals after publicly announcing his homosexuality.
Mr Borrow, who lives with his partner John, also revealed that he revealed he was gay without consulting Labour party officials in Downing Street.
Speaking to the Citizen from London yesterday, Mr Borrow, a former leader of Preston Borough Council, said: "The overall response from Labour Party members and my constituents has been very good.
"I have received supportive calls in both London and Leyland. But only time will tell if that will last. I am prepared for negative comments from a few people, but I can handle that."
Mr Borrow, who swept to power in South Ribble in the 1997 election, decided to speak out about his sexuality ahead of a crucial vote in Parliament, which could see the age limit for gay sex reduced from 18 to 16.
He added: "It is something I have always been planning to do but did not have time to do before the election.
"I consulted fellow MPs and spoke to the whips, but not to anyone at 10 Downing Street.
"I have never tried to hide the fact that I am gay and I am glad everyone knows now."
His announcement was praised by the local Labour Party leadership. Council leader Gina Lewis said: "David has the total support of the Council's Labour party in this area.
"Members of the Labour Party already knew about this so it is no surprise.
"David is doing an excellent job and serving the borough excellently."
