LEIGH got it only half right in their basement battle at Widnes.
A second-half transformation followed a first-half mauling, giving new coach Norman Turley some reason for optimism.
Leigh showed something like their true character after the interval.
But, by then, only pride was at stake after Widnes had plundered 28 first-half points on their way to a 36-16 win.
Turley, who ripped into his team at the break, admitted: "The damage was done early on.
"We started in the same careless vein we finished against Dewsbury and by the time we'd got to grips with things the game was out of reach.
"It's that sort of inconsistency we must remove from our game. A totally committed and focused 80 minutes will see us win more than we lose."
Anthony Murray, back on his old stomping ground, set up tries for Stuart Donlan and Alan Hadcroft, then scored his 10th in 15 games.
LEIGH: Bowker; Hill, Wingfield, Donlan, Hadcroft; Arkwright, Murray; Grundy, Donohue, Pucill, Norman, Costello, Garces. Subs: Gunning, Conway, Liku, Geritas.
