Seeking tales of Battling Ernie WHENEVER old-time pugilists gather to re-tell tales of fistic glory, the name of Ernie Proudlove often crops up. This despite the fact that it's now 70 years since this tough Sutton battler was in his prime.
Accounts of Ernie's endurance and dynamic punching have been carried down through the decades. And one person who would like to know more is his niece, Joan Brain, now living in Douglas, Isle of Man.
In trying to piece together the sporting life and times of Ernie, she'd welcome any photos of her famous uncle and would like to be put in contact with anyone specialising in family trees.
Joan and hubby Alan (both 66), who left Powell Street, Sutton, 35 years ago, can be contacted on 01624 852413. Alternatively, any info can be posted to me at the Star for passing on.
