MEMBERS of St Helens Youth Brass Band are celebrating a national Lottery 'win' after being awarded a grant for £32,102 by the Arts Council's charities board.
Recent winners of the advanced section of the National Youth Brass Band Championships, the band will use part of the money to buy new brass and percussion instruments. They also plan to commission a new piece of music to be written by brass composer Howard Snell, aimed at providing more opportunities for band members.
Meanwhile, the band are also trying to encourage more local youngsters - including those with special needs - to take up brass band music. They hold a number of sessions, including a beginners group for youngsters who have a slight knowledge of music, on Saturday mornings from 9.30am at Cowley High School's Music Suite, Gamble Avenue.
