A NEWLY refurbished play area, part of a multi-million pound redevelopment of a council estate in Padiham, will be officially opened next Wednesday.

Coun Barry Guttridge, chairman of Burnley Council recreation and leisure committee, will perform the opening ceremony at Malvern Avenue, Stonemoor Bottom.

Local children who attend the Busy Bee Club, which meets at the Phoenix Centre, designed the £30,000 play area with help from the council's parks staff.

Their ideas include climbing frames, a shelter and a dog grid to keep animals out of the woodchip surfaced playground.

The play area has been developed as part of the £3.6 million refurbishment of Stonemoor Bottom Estate.

Coun Guttridge said: "This is an exciting new play area which will give a great deal of pleasure to the children of the area."
