A BIRTHDAY party with a Hawaiian flavour was held for 101-year-old Gertrude Livesey at Sunny Bank Residential Home.
Staff dressed up in grass skirts with flowers in their hair at the Rishton care home on Blackburn Road and decorated potted palm trees with artificial butterflies for Gertrude's special day.
Born in Scotland, Gertrude has lived most of her life in Blackburn and worked in the cotton mills as a young woman. She married twice and moved from her Accrington Road home to Sunny Bank in 1991.
"She's absolutely fantastic for her age," said senior carer Agnes Cotton. "She's fascinating to talk to and she's still active and independent.
"She still sews though we thread the needles for her now as she's nearly blind."
Family and friends attended the celebration with the mayor and mayoress of Hyndburn, Councillor and Mrs Ian Ormerod.
