A LUCKY break in the weather saved Burnley Agricultural Show from financial ruin.
Early morning rain gave way to dull but dry conditions and although attendance was down the day was not the disaster it might have been.
Joint secretary, David Hayhurst, commented: "We have been darn lucky and that is all I can say.
"Gates are down but that is to be expected.
"But entries in almost every section were up, with record numbers of heavy horses.''
Another show next year is still not guaranteed. Mr Hayhurst added: "We will have to hold that decision in abeyance. "Had it continued to rain there would have been no show next year. But at least we can now pay our bills.
"People find it hard to believe but it costs £14,000 to £16,000 to put on the show. What we need is a really good sponsor.''
The show itself ran smoothly with plenty to entertain the visitors to Towneley Park.
Main arena events included the Motor Cycle Madmen and a display by the Clitheroe and Pendle Dog Agility Club.
Line dancers from the Old Brass Band Club at Nelson and the Derby Midshipmen Carnival Band also added to the entertainment.
There were sections for cattle, heavy and light horses, dogs, goats, sheep, rabbits, Welsh ponies, a baby show, craft fair and trade stands.
