A QUARRY worker is recovering in hospital after being crushed by a digger.

Michael Creighton, 44, was seriously hurt when the miniature digger he was driving went underneath a metal storage container at Tarmac Roadstone, Pimlico Link Road, Clitheroe, and his head and chest became wedged.

He was rushed to the Royal Preston Hospital with serious head and neck crush injuries. He is said to be in a "very comfortable" condition today.

An ambulance crew attended after the alarm was raised by fellow quarry workers.

Technician Wilf Jones said: "When we arrived the vehicle had been pulled from underneath the steel hopper. The man was unconscious and obviously in a bad way.

"We treated him at the scene until a crash team from the Royal Preston arrived."

Neighbours at his home in Alma Place, Clitheroe, expressed their shock and described Mr Creighton as a nice man who kept himself to himself.

The accident happened at 3.30pm on Friday. The Health and Safety Executive is investigating.
