I WRITE with reference to the article in a recent Citizen headlined 'Councillors hit the road.' According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary "democracy" is a state in which government by the people prevails. It doesn't say that this happens once a week of the year when councillors are worried that the cracks in their New Labour image are showing.
It doesn't say it's a road show to let the voters imagine they have £1,000,000 to spend - even though we haven't got it and can't afford to spend it or won't spend it because, well that's a silly idea, spending on recycling, integrated transport, renovating derelict buildings or finding a safe site for Fats and Proteins.
No we'd rather spend the money on Blobby, knocking down Bubbles, leaving the Kingsway Centre to rot and pretending to listen to out constituents...
So why not turn over a new leaf Lancaster city council and practise democracy all year round then the voters will be happy? Then Lancaster will be the city of our dreams and you will be a council to be proud of.
