POLICE are warning the elderly of Lowton and Golborne to be on their guard against conmen landscape gardeners.

These bogus workmen convince victims they need work carried out on their gardens and driveways, then get away with loads of money after completing minor work.

Recently a lone, elderly lady was approached three times by the same man who has charged her up to £160 for cutting her front and back lawns with a garden strimmer.

On another occasion a woman was billed £300 for removing weeds from her drive and filling in small gaps with a mixture of sand and cement.

Anyone approached by workmen offering to carry out jobs is advised to follow this seven point code, put together by Golborne Constable Lynn O'Brien and soon to be circulated to local OAP support groups:

Do NOT let them into your home.

Always be wary of workmen who visit homes touting for business, they are not always legitimate and charge too much for work carried out.

If you accept their offer, try to arrange for a friend, relative or neighbour to be there when work has been carried out and payment is required.

NEVER agree to let them take you to the bank or building society to withdraw money to pay them. If this is suggested, tell someone.

If you are alone and don't have anyone to assist you, ring the local police who will gladly visit and advise.

Be a good neighbour. If you see a situation where an elderly neighbour is being approached by workmen, or if work is being carried out at their home, be aware of this message.

If you do need a job doing at your home always choose a reputable firm.
