DETECTIVES searching for the killer of student Janet Murgatroyd say they are still receiving vital evidence, two years after her body was discovered floating in the River Ribble.

The hunt for 20-year-old Janet's killer was launched when her body was found on June 16, 1996, close to Penwortham New Bridge.

She had been murdered in the early hours of June 15, after a night out with friends in Preston town centre.

And although her killer is still at large, Detective Inspector Ian Kennedy still believes they can still solve the case.

He told the Citizen: "We are still receiving new leads and information from people which is very encouraging for us.

"As a result, our inquiries are still continuing. Although much of the information we have received has led to nothing, it will only take one lead to help us catch the killer."

Police also believe time may be on their side. DI Kennedy added: "We have always maintained that someone may be covering for the killer.

"It is quite possible that the person who has vital information may no longer be in a relationship or no longer be a friend of the killer.

"They may have previously felt obliged to keep quiet, but I would urge anyone who thinks they have information to come forward."

Law student Janet's mum Mary said the second anniversary of her daughter's death has brought back memories.

She added: "I am obviously still very sad at Janet's death and miss her terribly.

"Still, we must move on and look forward. I am confident that some day Janet's killer will be discovered.

"I hoped the publicity surrounding this second anniversary will help new information come to light."
