REGARDING the June 4 Journal article 'Going nuts in the Valley'.
As one of many people who used to have an allotment in The Valley, I applaud the idea of keeping The Valley green by carrying out the proposed clean-up and tree planting with sculptures to symbolize the area's industrial heritage.
May I point out that as well as the past industry in The Valley there has for many years been allotments there.
There locals could grow vegetables and flowers or keep a few chickens and geese which bypassers could also enjoy.
In truth the proposed site has never been industrial. It belongs to Alder House.
The industry was on the other side of the stream on the Valley Road where the allotments are. And this is where developers are now applying for planning permission for 34 houses.
If the three groups involved in this project want it to become part of Atherton Heritage Trail will they put their weight behind the petitions local people have signed and sent to Wigan planning department objecting to the development?
And will some land be saved for allotments among the sculptures of nails, bolts and bricks and the revamped pub and new school?
One of the last Valley allotment holders.
