MEMBERS of a local action group stepped up their campaign when they called on supermarkets to 'Change The Rule'.

The Darwen churches group is part of the National Christian Aid campaign 'Changing the Rule' which calls on supermarkets to revise the ethical standards of food production in their own brand products.

A giant till receipt showing the amount of money churchgoers have spent in the Blackburn Asda and Morrisons stores was presented to both managers in an attempt to make the stores adopt a code of conduct to protect Third World workers who produce much of the food we buy.

The campaign was launched 18 months ago after Christian Aid representatives investigated the conditions of workers in the Third World.

It aims to encourage large companies like supermarkets to improve working conditions in those developing countries.

So far, the campaign has been met with relative success, as some of the top supermarkets are trying to adopt the code by setting aside budgets.
