BOTH Sutton sides found themselves deadlocked with with Caldy at the weekend.
The firsts travelled to the Wirral and were subjected to an early blitz by the Caldy batsmen. However a great three-wicket spell by Geoff Bowles and two from Andy Brogan reduced Caldy to 75-5. Caldy then re-took the initiative, and held it until their declaration at 157-7.
Sutton's catching and fielding was again good with Ste Burrows outstanding.
Sutton's innings was well anchored by Bowles, Dave Hodgson and Phil Kelly and at 60-2 a victory was possible until three quick wickets fell to change the game. Mike Rimmer (23) and Ian Greener had other ideas and a swashbuckling 33 by Greener accelerated Sutton to 125-7 with time remaining.
Brogan carried on the good work but his dismissal and a run out left Reynolds and Barnett to play out the last three overs as Sutton closed on 143-9. Sutton will be optimistic of even better results when back to full strength.
The second eleven game at New Street was almost a mirror of the seniors.
Caldy hit 162-7 in 50 overs with the evergreen Roy Grice claiming 4-40. The outfielding was good but some dropped catches hindered the Sutton cause.
The batting was well served by another stalwart, Stu Rimmer, who hit a classy 44 and with good knocks by Dave Fargher (21), Phil Jukes and Martin Harvey. Sutton reached 144-7 at the close to take a well deserved share of the points in another keenly contested match.
The match balls were sponsored by PYC Engineering.
