FLEETWOOD progressed through to the next round of the Lancashire Cup at Broadwater on Sunday (June 14) when they comprehensively defeated Bolton League side Walkden by 122 runs.

Fleetwood batted first and rattled up 227 all out in 44.2 of their 45 overs and in reply Walkden could only make 105 in 33.2 overs.

The Fleetwood innings was built around professional Shawn Nicolson and John Wright.

They came together in the 10th over after Nick Coultas, 20, and Michael Clinning, three, had been dismissed and the pair added a sparkling 124 in 21 overs.

Wright just missed his half century when caught behind for 48 and Nicolson just missed out on his second successive century in the competition when he was well held at gully by Seddon for 96 made from 108 balls with nine fours and one six.

The rest contributed modestly to take Fleetwood to their 227 which was considerably reduced from expectations by a fine spell of bowling by Jason Trench who took 6-43 from his nine overs.

Walkden never recovered from losing their openers without a run on the board, both dismissed to the second ball they received.

Then came three crazy run outs, executed by Newman, from the boundary, Hesketh, a superb falling stop and throw from the prone position, and Nicolson a direct hit from short mid-wicket.

At 53-5 the game was up for Walkden and only a late flurry from Seddon, 29, and Wolstenholme, 18, saw them pass the century.

Fleetwood are now at home to holders St Annes on June 28 in the next round.
