SWINTON Lions are poised to sign former Wigan stand off Nigel Wright.
The Gigg Lane outfit are hoping to rescue the international star's career after he was axed by the Super League giants following a string of injuries.
Wright was released by Wigan earlier this season and, although still trying to prove his fitness to Central Park bosses, looks set to continue his playing career elsewhere.
Lions chief executive Tony Barrow said: "We are in talks with Wigan over Nigel Wright and we have also spoken to the player and his agent.
"It is a bit complicated at the moment. We are watching things from the sidelines. If he becomes available we will be first in for him. We have to keep an eye on developments."
Wright would be the latest in a string of Super League signings for the Lions, who have already snapped up George Mann, Paul Hulme, Ian Watson and Ian Blease from top flight clubs.
"We are trying to build the side cleverly," said Barrow. "We are getting there slowly."
The Lions go into Sunday's (June 21) home match with Widnes Vikings with an injury-free squad and on the back of a much-needed 28-34 win over Leigh Centurions.
They are still sitting in fifth spot in the Division One table and only a consistent run of form will lift them any higher.
Barrow added: "We weren't too convincing at Leigh but the win was pleasing. If we can string some back-to-back victories together we should start moving up.
"After Widnes, we have Featherstone away on Wednesday, then Dewsbury at home on Sunday. Some wins in those games and we could be second in the league by the end of the month.
"But everybody is focused on Sunday. Widnes beat us 34-18 in April so we are up for this one. Our home form has been very good this season and we are confident of recording a win."
Lions full back Mark Welsby should be back in the side in the next couple of weeks. He has almost recovered from the broken jaw he suffered in April.
