A SUPERMARKET chain has given councillors "more reasons" to be happy about the future of Nelson town centre after plans to develop a former mill site were handed in to Pendle Council.
Bradford-based Morrisons has applied for permission to build a store plus associated parking, car wash and petrol station on the site of the former J B Battye mill in Pendle Street.
The company is also interested in taking space for a supermarket in Vivary Way, Colne, although it is expected that only one scheme will go ahead.
The Nelson project, seen as an important step in rejuvenating the town centre, is expected to go before councillors in the autumn.
The Colne land is the subject of a planning inquiry scheduled for September with a decision not expected before the end of the year.
Nelson area committee chairman Councillor Colin Waite said: "It's great to have the plans in and we're looking forward to seeing the site developed for the betterment of Nelson."
Meanwhile Morrisons' rival Asda and Boundary Mill Stores have formerly submitted a joint planning application to extend their stores in Colne and create a larger car park across Corporation Street.
The scheme is expected to be discussed by Colne councillors later in the summer.
