PLANS to ease the pressure on "unsatisfactory" sewers in Nelson have been submitted to Lancashire County Council.
Environment Agency bosses say 12 overflows have been struggling to cope with increased water flows during heavy rain.
The problem is made worse because Nelson's sewers combine rain water and sewage.
County Councillors look set to approve a project to build five control kiosks in key areas to manage the network during periods of heavy demand.
The kiosks will be placed above underground sewerage chambers which will be reconstructed to aid streamlining of the system. The kiosks will be sited near the entrance of the multi-storey car park on Netherfield Road, on Chapel House Road near Walverden Park, on land off Reedyford Road, on Lomeshaye Way and near to the Fleet Street car park.
Pendle Borough Council has not objected to the work provided landscaping work is completed near the Walverden Park and Lomeshaye Way kiosks.
The only objections to the work came from a small number of residents near Reedyford Road who fear the kiosks will create increased noise.
Lancashire County Council development sub-control committee is set to approve the plans at a meeting tomorrow.
