TOP rider Damien Hack rode brilliantly on his England debut. One of Astley & Tyldesley Cycle Speedway's hottest young riders, he was the youngest in the team and he dropped just two points in five races as England raced to victory over Scotland and Wales.
Mike Hack scored 11 points in the British Veterans semi-final at Leicester but failed to qualify for the final.
Meanwhile, A&T sped to victory in the British League North Junior Cup semi-final against Bury. The holders opened up with a maximum 7-3 heat win and ran out 81-69 winners. Unbeaten Danny Ward led the scoring with 19 points (+1 bonus). Other scorers: Martin Phillips 16 (2), Lee Smethills 16, Damien Hack 15 (2), Dale Edwards 5, Matthew Helme 5, Robert Black 4, Patrick Roberts 1.
The return of Phil Moreton inspired A&T to their best performance of the season in Manchester League Division One. He had excellent support from Lee Smethills, Mike Hack and Danny Ward. Final score: Denton 56, A&T 49, Stockport 24. Scorers: Moreton 15 (+1), Hack 12, Smethills 11 (2), Ward 9 (2), Phillips 2.
But a depleted junior squad found it tough at Sheffield in Round Three of the Manchester League Division Two series. Final score: Denton 62, Bury 56, A&T 54, Sheffield 41, Stockport 14. Scorers: Matthew Helme 16, Lee Smethills 14, Robert Black 13, Danny Black 6, Patrick Roberts 5.
A&T also hit third spot in the British League North Junior League match at Bury. Final score: Bury 73, Heckmondwike 69, A&T 56, Tameside 55, Sheffield 41, Birmingham 34, Stockport 25, Hull 10. Scorers: Matthew Helme 15, Robert Black 14, Dale Edwards 10, Patrick Roberts 9, Danny Black 8.
And there was another third place in the British League North Fours match at Bury, scoring 27 points behind Tameside 54, Stoke 53 and ahead of Sheffield 24. Scorers: Mike Hack 8, Dale Edwards 7, Robert Black 7, Matthew Helme 5.
A&T scored a fine win in the British League North Junior League. Scorers: Damien Hack 16, Lee Smethills 15, Matthew Helme 14, Robert Black 14, Martin Phillips 13, Patrick Roberts 11, Dale Edwards 8, Danny Black 7. In the British League North Senior Fours a second-half collapse wrecked A&T chances. Scorers: Lee Smethills 6, Mike Hack 6, Martin Phillips 5, Lee Phillips 3, Damien Hack 2. Score: Stoke 48, Bury 44, Heckmondwike 43, A&T 22.
