OFFICES in Preston town centre have become the target for opportunist thieves taking advantage of the summer weather, police have revealed.
Cunning criminals have been walking into premises on the off-chance they can snatch valuable belongings when no-one is looking.
Officers are now urging workers to be on their guard at home as well as at the office.
Chief Inspector Warren Turner explained: "There are a lot of these incidents taking place and it is of great concern to us.
"Often people will walk into a building and if they are caught, they will normally come up with an excuse, such as asking where the toilet is."
Mr Turner added: "Criminals will walk up to a door, knock on it, and if it is answered, they will hold a short conversation before leaving. If there is no reply, they will know it is safe to break in."
Police are now appealing for anyone who sees someone where they shouldn't be, or is involved in a doorstep conversation, to contact police with a full description.
