POLICE officers who disarmed a man who tried to stab them with a 10-inch kitchen knife have been commended by the Chief Constable of Lancashire.
Acting Sergeant Anwar Mahmood and PC Daniel Wild went to a house in Burnley after reports that a man was trying to kill himself.
When they arrived the man ran towards them brandishing the knife and tried repeatedly to stab PC Wild in the back.
After a chase, he turned on APS Mahmood, also trying to stab him.
Eventually, the officers persuaded the man to put the weapon down.
He was arrested and after assessment by medical officers, was found to be suffering from a psychiatric condition.
Pennine police division operations manager Superintendent Alf Hitchcock, said: "Both officers displayed bravery and great courage in facing this offender without thought for their own safety.
"I feel we are very fortunate to have these officers working in this division."
