SPARTANS have finally won a league game in the St Helens Rounders League, beating Rainhill 7-4 at Ruskin Drive.
Rainhill batted first and scored only one rounder, through Carroll Whittaker, from 44 good balls. Spartans hit seven from 28 good balls through Jean Thompson (2), Sue Barton (2), Janet Mayer (2) and Jackie Bailey. Rainhill were unable to add to their tally when they batted again, making Spartans' second innings unnecessary.
Windle City, last year's Division Two and Stanley Jones Cup winners, defeated Vikings 3-3 at Ruskin.
Vikings were unable to score from 33 good balls in their first innings. And Windle had to rely on two half-rounders for no-balls to Carmel Parr and Marian Wharton in their 67-ball first innings.
Vikings' second innings brought rounders from Catherine McManus, Carolyn Slater and Lynsey Pumford. However, Windle City clinched the game when Joanne Fairclough struck two rounders and Janet Kenny was awarded half-a-round for two no balls.
Meanwhile, in the semi-finals of Division One's Emily Collins Cup, Spartans play UGB and Vikings meet Bobbies Lane or Haydock. In Division Two's Stanley Jones Cup semi-final Danes play Grasshoppers to earn the right to meet Romans, who beat Bobbies Lane in the other semi.
