BURY boy Andrew Jon Deakin made a try scoring debut in his first game for Swinton Lions Academy Under-19s youth side, with a very impressive 58-14 away victory over Workington Town Academy.
The Young Lions - who are the youngest side ever fielded by Swinton - are improving week by week despite giving many years advantage to the opposition. On Saturday they found themselves 10-2 down after only 10 minutes but by half-time had built a 28-10 lead with tries from scrum-half Sean Furey, centre Nathan Dyke, captain Garath Norman and centre Michael Nanyn, plus four conversions.
Workington started the second-half like the first and scored an unconverted try to make the score 28-14 to the Lions. But that was their last chance, as the Young Lions took control of the game adding a further five second-half tries from full-backs Wayne English, Gareth Norman and Jon Deakin and two tries from Michael Nanyn to complete his hat-trick, with five conversions to make a personal points tally of 30 points. But this was no one-man show by the Academy. It was in fact a very good team performance by the youngsters who are learning quickly week by week, from the expertise of coach Stan Gittens and the playing experience on the Academy stage.
This week the Young Lions will be looking to add to that experience with a visit on Saturday to Keighly and hopefully, two more league points.
Man of the Match against Workington was 16-year-old scrum-half Sean Furey.
