IT was a busy weekend for some members of Bury Jack-Hamer Builders Cycle Speedway.

A long trip to east London to race at the Hawbush track did not deter Paul Dyson and Neil Howarth who coasted through the qualifying round to earn their places in the last 48 riders to contest the British Individual Championships in the south west over August bank holiday weekend. Paul scored 15 points and Neil 13.

Sunday's Northern Fours League and Junior League events at Goshen started with a damp, heavy track which improved throughout the afternoon of racing and was in truly superb condition by the end.

A somewhat weakened senior foursome battled well in the first event to consolidate third place ahead of Hull but behind winners Birmingham and runners-up Stockport. The scores: 51-47-38-23 reflect the differences between the sides.

Bury scorers: N. Howarth 14, M. Parr 9, S. Mann 8, P. Fisher 6.

The juniors were outstanding on their own circuit with a great combined performance gaining first place overall on the day, against their usual second or third spot in this competition in which eight clubs took part.

In the under 13 section, Ben Scranage was again unbeaten in his four rides for maximum 16 points. Tom Doyle scored eight.

In the under 16 group, Robert Pearce scored 10 and Scott Jarman six and in the top group, for under 19s and combination division riders, Matthew Parr notched 13 points, Steve Jarman 11, and George Lindsay nine.

Overall scores on the day: Bury Jack-Hamer Builders 73, Heckmondwike 69, Tameside 55, Astley and Tyldesley 52, Sheffield 41, Birmingham 34, Stockport-Spinks Bakers 25, Kingston Cycles-Hull 10.

On Sunday, July 5, Bury are at home to Tameside in British League North fixtures starting at Goshen Track at 2pm.

The second and first team match starts at 3pm.

Recruitment, training and practice sessions continue every Wednesday evening from 7pm.
