CRITICAL staff shortages at Blackburn Infirmary meant the closure of eight orthopaedic beds, it was revealed.
Sickness among nurses and the allocation of student nurses to other wards meant staffing levels were seriously reduced.
David Kenny, district general manager for the Blackburn, Hyndburn, and Ribble Valley health authority, said: "We are trying to recruit some more staff."
