MIDWIVES will make their own special delivery to babies born this weekend.
Staff in the maternity unit at Queen's Park Hospital, Blackburn, are to give new arrivals' mums a birthday certificate to mark the 50th anniversary of the NHS.
The certificates, produced by the Royal College of Midwives, are for babies born today and tomorrow - the day of the anniversary.
The certificates will provide a souvenir of the time, place and date along with the name of the delivering midwife.
Janice Bufton, clinical midwifery specialist at Queen's Park, said: "We are delighted to be able to mark this special anniversary of the NHS at a local level at a time when we can say mothers and babes are safe in our hands.
"During the last 50 years maternal, perinatal and infant mortality rates have fallen to their lowest rates ever."
Royal College of Midwives general secretary Karlene Davis said: "Since the formation of the NHS, we have delivered 35 million babies.
"Midwives continue to strive to provide high quality midwifery care and will remain at the heart of the NHS maternity services."
