THE subject matter of this letter was intended to give total support to the traffic-calming section of Blackburn with Darwen Council.
These sections have had a very bad press lately, and I was going to give them the supportive benefit of my 50 years' experience as a driver. But they have shot themselves in the foot.
Humps were completed seven weeks ago in the Lawrence Street area of Bank Top to the delight of most of the residents, who had been very concerned about the speed of traffic on the street.
It was discovered when the workmen had completed the job that they had left a 6ft 3ins gap on two of the humps on the downhill section. The majority of traffic is now zig-zagging to within inches of the grass verge to avoid the humps.
Children play on the grass verges and mothers have started to put their wheelie bins in the gaps in a desperate effort to keep traffic from running through them.
Representations have been made to the Town Hall, asking why this very dangerous situation has been allowed to come about. No official response.
Some of us do not need reminding that the 6ft 3ins gaps between the end of the humps and the verges are about the length you would need for a grave. The Lawrence Street Community needs some action. They need it now.
