HUNDREDS of East Lancashire soldiers who lost their lives during the Battle of the Somme were honoured and remembered at a special service at Blackburn Cathedral. Officers from The Queen's Lancashire Regiment met on the 82nd anniversary of the famous battle, which began on July 1, 1916.
The regiment, which included the ill-fated Accrington Pals battalion, suffered more casualties on that day than any other in it's history, with just 237 of the 700 men present to answer their names when the roll was called. The Commemoration Service takes place each year to remember all ranks of the regiment who fought there.
