A YOUNG hawk went missing on its maiden flight.

Now falconer Steve Lea is hoping his 12 weeks-old Harris hawk has managed to survive life in the wild.

A gust of wind carried the young bird off in the direction of Astley when Steve's dad Cllr John Lea left open the mews door at his Leigh home.

Anxious Cllr Lea told The Journal:"I'm just hoping it will survive. It has the instinct to fend for itself but it is only young and could be attacked by magpies or rooks."

The brown bird with black and white tail-feathers stands about 15 inches high and has a 2 ft wingspan.

Anyone who has seen it should call 01942 519124.
