GREENS aim to grab more of the limelight.

On Monday at 7.15pm Leigh Green Party holds its annual meeting in Leigh Town Hall. And the north west's newest branch will be preening itself after a hectic first 12 months. The Greens' Chris Maile said:"It is now simply a question of time before we see the first Green councillors in Wigan.

"The Green Party has come from nowhere to a position where it is now openly accepted that it is the only real opposition to Labour within the borough."

Mr Maile added:"Unfortunately the Green Party are misconceived as a bunch of hippies swinging from tree tops. The reality is the average age of local members is 38, 65 per cent are women (75 per cent mothers), 90 per cent are employed locally and 95 per cent have (apart from voting) never been involved with politics before.

"They are all 100 per cent dedicated to improving the local environment and stopping destructive over-development."
