WIGAN and Leigh Hospice won a bonus auction double when college staff said a fond farewell to their old base at the end of term.

The Hairdressing, Beauty and Holistic Therapies department at Wigan and Leigh College, housed temporarily in the old DHSS buildings in Grasmere Street, Leigh, since 1979, put all their old equipment under the hammer.

Going, going, gone was one treatment bed to staff nurse Gail Baybutt, who then received a second as a gift to the hospice as a goodwill gesture from the college.

Barbara Weston, programme co-ordinator, said staff and students will have the benefit of a brand new purpose built building with spanking new equipment in Coniston Street from September.

She said: "We are delighted with the prospect of moving and can't believe our good fortune. It was great to see Gail at the auction with two of the hospice volunteers.

"I know the hospice depends a great deal on people like these and donating the second bed was the least we could do."
