SPORTS stars are getting younger every day - just look at this energetic bunch.

Inspired by this summer's success stories, the children of Bamber Bridge Methodist School couldn't wait to compete in their own brand of sport.

So for their annual sports day, the young scholars decided to use their initiative - and a few odds and ends they found lying around the Wesley Street school grounds. Take several old tyres, a few plastic containers and a rapidly-erected basketball, and what do you get? The DIY Olympics!

While in one part of the field, teams of two burned rubber on the Wesley Street school's sports field in the rolling tyre race, there were winners in more conventional games.

Diminutive competitors netted plenty of points at the basketball ring - with a helping hand from their teachers! - while the other children set about inventing their own activities.

The fun-packed games marked the start of the long summer break, and was the climax to the term.

One proud parent said: "Seeing the children having so much fun was great for everybody. The kids really put their hearts and souls into it.

"It was nice to get a break from the rain."
