AS the curtain rises on the battle to rescue the closure-threatened Theatre Royal, the alcohol ban policy of its Methodist management team Connexions has come under fire.

Trevor Prescott, Chairman of the management group for the Theatre Royal and administrative secretary of the Independent Methodist Connexion of Churches said: "Our policy of not serving alcohol has cost us financially in comparison with what other theatres are making from their bars.

"However, this was a policy which was decided before we took over the theatre and was discussed with the trustees before we signed the lease. We have had complaints from individuals and the policy has been reviewed but at this moment we have no plans to change the policy."

As part of the campaign to raise £150,000 to carry out urgent roof repairs, talks have been held between the Theatre Royal (St. Helens) Trust and St. Helens Council.

A council spokesperson said: "The Council is mindful of the urgency of the situation. A number of options and ideas have been discussed."

Following a meeting at the theatre last Friday, townsfolk are urged to support the appeal.

Among cash-spinning ideas are brass name plates on seats for £100, the first of which has already been sold; donations and to buy a roof tile for £1.
