RA"AID gunmen made a savage supermarket swoop and netted £70,000.

The ram-raiders grabbed the money as security guards filled cash dispensers after closing time on Friday night at Asda's Golborne store.

Three attackers snatched the cash after threatening the guards at gunpoint. They crashed through the Edge Green Lane store entrance in a vehicle later found abandoned near the East Lancashire Road.

Late night workers watched in amazement as the balaclava-clad thieves threatened the guards with a handgun and a heavy club. Store staff alerted Police but the robbers got away in the Rover 827 which had been stolen from Liverpool.

The silver, G-reg vehicle was dumped near Golborne Island.

Ch Insp Brian Wroe described the raid as "vicious".

He said:"A substantial amount of money was stolen but it is the viciousness which concerns us most.

"I would ask anyone who saw the robbery or the vehicle before or afterwards to contact us immediately."
