SPECIAL powers to crack down on Morecambe's 'slum landlords' have been introduced to the resort.

The city council has backing from the Secretary of State to ensure multi-occupancy properties are up to scratch.

The council will be checking that properties are suitable for occupation and meet minimum standards, are run by fit and proper people, the property is well managed and maintained to a minimum standard and the behaviour of their tenants is responsible.

Failure to meet these new provisions will mean landlords face prosecution and their properties may be struck off the register.

Deputy Leader, Ian Barker, said: "We now have a new power to regulate houses in multiple occupation. Landlords must realise that they have a responsibility to manage their property properly and ensure that their tenants behave in a responsible way. Good landlords already do this but we are determined to tackle the minority of irresponsible landlords. I am very pleased that the Government have given us these increased powers."

Housing Chairman, Cllr Terrie Metcalfe, added: "As a resident of Morecambe and a councillor for the central area, I know that these new powers will be welcomed by local people. The Council will do its best to use its powers to improve housing conditions."

A £200,000 cash boost to improve properties in the West End of Morecambe has been given the go-ahead. The extra cash will allow up to 45 properties in the Brunswick Road/Gardner Road area to be revamped and repaired. The new money will be added to the £700,000 earmarked for improvements in the West End.
