WORK to unearth Bury's castle monument ruins could begin as soon as October.
The English Heritage has given its approval for archaeological works to take place on the site at the rear of Castle Buildings in the town centre.
The plan will now go before planning chiefs in the borough for final consent.
A £100,000 grant, from the Heritage Lottery Fund, will be used to uncover and restore the remains of Bury Castle, a medieval fortress dating back to the 15th century, which will be put on display for future generations.
The work will see the remains of a buttressed castle wall and the moat being dug up. Other features, including footings of the fortified house and the lines of the enclosing wall, will also be exhibited.
