THREE smart-thinking St Helens companies and one from Newton have had their innovative development schemes rewarded with Department of Trade and Industry SMART awards. Esspee Fabrications Ltd., of Merton Bank Road, were awarded £56,392; Future Safety Ltd, in Neils Road, Bold, won £31,782; Richardson Ltd. in Lancots Lane, Sutton, got £155,160; and Hillborn Engineering Ltd. based at Earle Road, Newton, were awarded £45,000.

The DTI awards are aimed at providing small businesses with financial assistance to develop and test new technology. And the four companies were presented with their awards during a special ceremony held at Liverpool John Moores University on Friday.
