NOT being a car owner myself, I wish to warn car owners what they are in for should they listen to John Prescott and give up theirs.

What should be one of the major events of the year, the Royal Lancashire Show, is on this week.

Let's have a day out, I said. I rang information to find out what time buses were going.

Change at Chorley, we were told. What times are buses from Chorley? You may be able to get to the showgroud but we're not sure, we were told.

My wife went into Blackburn to buy pre-booked tickets, a saving of £12 or more for six of us.

Sorry! - that's Lancashire County Council, we're Blackburn. We don't have tickets - you'll have to pay at the door. What a nonsense.

On phoning the showground, we were told not to go unless we had wellingtons as they were knee-deep in mud. Needless to say, we cancelled the day out and the show organisers will be moaning about poor attendance figures.

We will have a day out going round the car showrooms instead.
