PENDLE MP Gordon Prentice wants the Government to open up the dungeons where the Pendle witches were held before they were condemned to death.

The Labour backbencher has launched a new campaign to ensure that people interested in the history of East Lancashire's most famous characters can actually see where they were held.

Mr Prentice, wants the dungeons at Lancaster Castle opened to the public. The cells, 30 feet below the present day prison, held the witches in 1612 before they were found guilty and condemned to death for witchcraft.

Mr Prentice said: "What happened in 1612 was a terrible miscarriage of justice but we cannot right the wrongs of days gone by. These dungeons should be on the tourist trail. We can and should allow the public to visit these historic dungeons which housed the Pendle witches in 1612."
