PAUL Carman produced a shot from his "memory bank" to win the De Vere Hotels PGA North Region Championship at Heron's Reach, Blackpool, today.

The 36-year-old, who lives in Burnley, rolled a birdie on the final green to force a play-off with first round leader Mike Macara, of Rhos-on-Sea, at four-under-par.

But after missing from six feet at the first extra hole and from 12 at the next, he made sure of the title with a precision approach with a three wood to the third, the ninth on the card.

Ex-Northenden assistant Carman, winner of the Leeds Cup six years ago and a former European Club Professional champion, said: "I had 230 yards to the flag and with the wind against I knew I had to give it my best shot. I certainly pulled that one out of the memory bank."

He drew the ball back on the wind and it landed softly some five feet from the hole and with Macara on the back fringe in three, Carman slotted in his birdie putt to settle the issue.

Carman, who also clinched the region's order of merit for the first time, added: "I don't play as often as I used to because the shop takes up most of the time. Although I enjoyed my four years on the European Tour I also missed my son, Ross, growing up which is something I will also regret."

Chorley's Lora Fairclough was eight shots behind leader Laura Davies in the Swedish Chrsyler Open after shooting a 76 to follow her first round 75.
