PRIME Minister John Major joined the chorus of criticism over North West Water bosses' massive pay rises.

In a letter from Downing Street to Blackburn MP Jack Straw he stressed that the bosses should show pay restraint, and showed his sympathy for East Lancashire water consumers.

Mr Straw and Burnley MP Peter Pike demanded immediate cuts in pay, perks and pension packages.
