BURNLEY gymnast Craig Heap has been selected in the England team for the Commonwealth Games.

Heap, ranked number one in Britain, had been in danger of missing out on a place in the England team through injury.

He missed the English Open because of a tendon tear in his shoulder and a shin injury.

But was given the chance to prove his fitness last weekend after wining the London Open.

"I missed the trial but the selectors gave me the chance to show that I was fit again," said the 25-year-old.

"The competition is held over three days. There's the team event on day one.

"On day two the top 20 take part in the individual event and on the final day the competition is on each individual piece of apparatus. "We should be one of the favourites for gold in the team event," said Heap, who is now based at Lilleshall were he trains full-time.

Heap, who captains the Great Britain team, missed out on selection four years ago when was fifth in the qualifiers.

"We could only afford to send a four-man team and I was reserve.

"We can send five this time but it didn't matter after a I had qualified."
