BURNLEY MP Peter Pike will tonight appeal for Government action to promote the use of compressed natural gas in cars to save dozens of jobs in his constituency.

The Labour backbencher will make his case at a special 30-minute House of Commons debate.

He believes the Government can do far more to use the gas in its own vehicles and persuade local authorities, companies and private individuals to use the fuel.

Lucas in Burnley is threatening to discontinue manufacturing the gas cylinders, with the loss of at least 40 of the 70 jobs.

Mr Pike successfully negotiated an extra contract with Ford in America to keep the plant open until September 18.

Now he is trying to get emergency measures to boost demands for what he believes is a valuable future environmental asset.
