DOUBLE act Lee Smethills and Phil Moreton did their stuff for England and Ireland.

The Astley & Tyldesley Cycle Speedway aces featured prominently in the European Championships at Oxford.

Phil was the best rider on view in the European Nations Cup, scoring 18 points to inspire Ireland to second place behind England.

Lee also notched 18 points in the Junior Comp, but his England side had to settle for second spot after a run-off against Poland.

In the European Individual Championships at Poole Phil hit eighth spot on 12 points; Lee qualified for the junior final, his 13 points giving him seventh spot.

In the Northern Junior Individual Championships at Heckmondwike A&T riders were on the trophy trail. Matthew Helme beat Robert Black in a run-off for third in the U13s after both scored 17 points. Damien Hack was second in the U16s on 19 points, losing out to ex-A&T man Daniel Hughes, now with Stockport. At U19s Martin Phillips was fourth on 13 points.

A&T finished second in Round Four of the Northern Junior League, scoring 82 points, just two behind hosts Heckmondwike.

A&T were well beaten in their Northern Senior Fours League match at Heckmondwike, fourth on 27, well behind winners Tameside (47).
