A BLACKBURN woman died and a man was seriously injured when their car smashed into an ornamental rock and overturned outside a Darwen stoneworks today.

The 28-year-old woman, whose named is not being revealed until relatives have been informed, was a passenger in the Austin Montego involved in the accident in Goose House Lane.

She was killed instantly when the car crashed outside the entrance to the Darwen Roadstone factory at 6.30am.

Darwen firefighters freed the 25-year-old driver from the wrecked car and he was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary with head injuries.

Sgt John McLaughlin, of Lancashire Constabulary's Road Safety Unit, said it had been raining very heavily.

No other vehicle was involved and it is thought the driver may have lost control on the slippery road.
