HEALTH watchdogs will be demanding the Secretary of State's intervention if more options for reorganising the mental health service in Burnley are not considered.

Frank Clifford, chairman of the Community Health Council for Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale, said Burnley Health Care Trust had proposed only one option with a view to saving £280,000 from the service budget.

He said: "One option does not constitute consultation. We want to see a range of possibilities so that the best one can be agreed and implemented."

A special meeting of the CHC took place last night and a letter has been sent to the East Lancashire Health Authority today.

Mr Clifford said: "The council agreed unanimously that we want a realistic range of options on how and where the finances should be reinvested.

"The CHC does not consider that the six weeks time which we have been given to respond is satisfactory and that period should be extended.

"If they dismiss the letter we will take the matter to the Secretary of State for determination."
