Morecambe 1 Burnley 0

A CLASSY Morecambe performance secured a deserved victory against league opponents Burnley in this pre-season friendly that made good their recent drubbing at the hands of Wigan. A 51st minute goal by left back John Norman was the only spoils in this close-fought contest and the Shrimps boss Jim Harvey will be well pleased with the way his team played. Sticking to a wing-back formation throughout the entire 90 minutes, the defence held firm against the likes of Burnley's Andy Cook and the Claret's new boss, Stan Ternent, will be hoping for better things come the start of the season.

Harvey said: "I'm very impressed with the way the lads are shaping up . They are beginning to look sharp and, although I'm not so bothered about the results, we're obviously trying to win."

The goal came six minutes after the restart and it was the most spectacular goal Kennedy's every likely to score for the Shrimps.

Morecambe were awarded a free kick after Wayne Curtis was fouled on the edge of the box and up stepped Kennedy to deftly float the ball into the far corner of the goal past goalie Tony Parks.

Burnley's Cook came close to equalising but the strengthened Shrimp defence dealt effectively with everything that was thrown at them.

Trialist Phil Hadden from Blackpool put in a good performance as did young Barry keeling, son of the Shrimp's B team boss.

Team: Banks, Kearney, Kennedy, Waller, Mayers, Horlicks, Knowles, Keeling, Curtis, Norman, Hadden.
