A CHARITY which helps people repair and brighten up their homes is hoping to find funds for a new decorating scheme.

The idea is the brainchild of volunteers at Hyndburn Homewise, a home improvement agency run by a dedicated band of fundraisers.

The latest project comes after a one-off scheme to spruce up a pensioner's front room proved a great success.

Three students from Accrington and Rossendale college painted the 73-year-old's lounge with a little help from local decorating firm Porters.

Now the group is hoping to set up a more permanent scheme to help other people.

Homewise manager Sue Sinclair said: "One of the problems people are faced with when they get older is that they cannot manage to decorate their own house.

"It can become very depressing because they are less inclined to invite neighbours and friends round, but at the same time they want to carry on living independently.

"Decorating does have a dramatic effect on people's lives but is seen as something of a luxury, because we usually spend money on dry rot and wiring problems.

"This was a one-off to start with. A lady who was involved in one of our schemes recently lost her son and felt vulnerable.

"But we got in touch with Porters and the students. Painting the room made a big difference. It was good experience for the students and we were really grateful to those who helped.

"We hope to do more of this in the future, but we need to raise funds for a supervisor to work with the students."
