LEIGH Euro MP Terry Wynn is backing a call for better safety rules in European camping and caravan sites.

As some Leigh area residents headed-off on holiday, Terry supported the launch of a report in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on safety at camp and caravan sites in the EU by motoring and tourist organisations including the Caravan Club and the Camping and Caravanning Club.

He is supporting many of the report's recommendations including:

A review of camp and caravan site safety procedures and controls by European national, regional and local authorities.

A risk assessment of all new and existing camp and caravan sites looking at threats such as from fire, flood and air and water pollution.

Early warning systems and evacuation facilities such as emergency lighting and escape routes.

In most EU countries safety regulations for camping and caravan sites are mainly limited to fire prevention on the site, storage of bottled gas and sanitation.

Good news for people holidaying in France, the country most visited by British holidaymakers, the report says France has the best legislation on the prevention of flooding, the provision of alarm systems and information on emergencies.

Terry (pictured) said: "With lots of Leigh families on their summer holidays, this report could not be more timely. Although most camp and caravan sites in Europe are safe, accidents do happen. The worst was the flash flood in August 1996 at the Virgin de as Nievas campsite in Spain where 86 people died."

He added: "I wholeheartedly endorse the many sensible recommendations contained in this report. Now it is upto the appropriate European, national, regional and local organisations to implement it, I sincerely hope they do."
