AN Atherton support group was bus-sing with delight after receiving a helping hand from a local transport company.

Parents Need Parents, which backs mums and dads of children with special needs based in Hag Fold, has received a £500 Community Award from First Manchester after being selected by the Bolton depot as worthy recipients of a gift.

The cash has been used to buy equipment for children who attend the group, which was formed in March, and is the only one of its kind in the area.

Unlike many parent support groups children are allowed at meetings, and the 13 who currently attend need constant supervision.

Two playleaders have recently joined the team to organise activities for the youngsters, which will enable group sessions to focus on the needs of parents.

Ann Neale, group chairman, was delighted to receive the award.

She said: "Children with special needs are often isolated and rejected by other children. This group gives them an opportunity to develop friendships and social skills.

"The group had no equipment suitable for children and the donation has enabled us to buy a range of items, from craft materials to playmats and sports apparatus."

The group meets every two weeks at Hag Fold Community Centre, Dorset Road. For further details contact Ann on 01942 792240.

First Manchester's Bolton depot is one of the company's five garages which participate in the quarterly Community Award Scheme. Staff at each depot select a local group or individual from nominations sent in by local people, which they feel deserve financial support.

To nominate a worthy recipient for the next round of awards which will be presented in August, applicants should write to Paul Clear, Community Awards, First Manchester, Wallshaw Street, Oldham, OL1 3TR.

Applicants must explain who they are, who they are writing on behalf of and exactly how the £500 will be spent, what it will achieve and how it will benefit people within First Manchester's operating area.
